Financial Planning in Hammond, Indiana
A Career Change Can Change More Than Your Paycheck
Financial planning for Hammond, Indiana residents can start when work changes: a new employer, a reduced schedule or the decision to retire. The immediate question may be what to do with an old retirement account. The larger question is how your income, savings and responsibilities fit together.
I'm James Mehok. I work directly with you to understand where you are, where you want to go and the decisions that need attention. Together, we connect those priorities to a financial plan and follow through on agreed next steps.
Put the Employment Decision in Your Financial Picture
Before making an account decision, we review your household spending, cash reserve, benefits and the timing of your next income source. Money needed for a transition has a different job from money intended for retirement years down the road. We identify which decisions need attention now and which can wait.
Review Your Workplace Retirement Accounts
A job change may leave you with several accounts and investment choices. We discuss the available options, including leaving money in a former employer plan when permitted, moving it to a new plan when available or considering an IRA. Fees, investment choices, services, distribution rules and other features matter; a rollover is not automatically the right choice.
If You Live in Indiana and Work Across the State Line
For a Hammond household with employment in Illinois, the planning conversation should include questions for your tax professional about withholding, filing obligations and how a change in employment affects cash flow. I coordinate the financial plan with your CPA rather than assuming that an account decision can be separated from your tax picture.
Replace an Account-Balance Goal With an Income Conversation
We connect expected retirement spending with Social Security, any pension benefits and potential investment withdrawals. Then we review the gap, the timing and the risk in the investments supporting it. That makes the retirement decision more specific than simply asking whether you have saved enough.
A Practical Planning Conversation
Consider a hypothetical Hammond couple: one spouse is changing jobs while the other hopes to retire within several years. Their first priority may be preserving enough accessible savings for the transition, rather than moving every account immediately. We would compare their income timeline, benefits and investment allocation before discussing an implementation plan.

How We Work Together
Our discovery conversation focuses on your goals, concerns and current financial picture. If we decide to work together, we clarify services, fees and responsibilities before proceeding. The agreed scope guides the planning, implementation and ongoing reviews. When tax, legal or other specialized questions arise, I help coordinate the conversation with your qualified professionals.

Questions From Hammond Residents
Should I move my 401(k) as soon as I leave a job?
Not necessarily. We review the available choices and their tradeoffs in your circumstances before discussing a recommendation. Your former plan documents and a recent statement are useful starting points.
What if I am not ready to set a retirement date?
We can examine several possible dates and the spending, savings and income assumptions behind each. The purpose is to identify what would need to change, not to force a date before you are comfortable.
Where can we meet?
Phone and video meetings are available for Hammond residents. In-person meetings are available by appointment only at a shared meeting space in Crown Point, Indiana. I also travel to meet clients at their homes or businesses by arrangement. We do not have an office in Hammond; our Schererville P.O. Box is for mailing only.
What happens in the first meeting?
The first conversation is a free discovery meeting lasting about 30–60 minutes. We get to know you, your goals and what matters most, and begin identifying priorities. No recommendations are made at this first meeting. Bring your questions and a general picture of your finances; do not send sensitive account information through the website form.
